Be Great

by P.S. Harper

“You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great.”

“That’s an awesome idea!” exclaimed Cindy. “When you gonna do it?”

Less enthusiastically, Grant said, “I probably won’t.”

“Why not? I think that’s a great idea!”

Grant rubbed the back of his neck in apparent anguish. “Someone else has probably already thought of it.”

“I’ve never heard of it.” Cindy encouragingly held up her hands. “Even if someone has, if you start now, you’ll probably beat ‘em to it.”

“I don’t know.” Grant shook his head. “I don’t know nothin’ about it. Besides, I’m sure it’s a lot of work and will cost a lot of time and money.”

Which side of that coin are you usually on? Are you the one incessantly looking for reasons why something won’t work, or do you feel you must constantly encourage someone in your life to do something?

How often do we allow fear to prevent us from accomplishing something that we believe in our hearts would be a terrific idea? We may create all kinds of excuses or reasons not to get started or finish, but is it really anything other than good ol’-fashioned fear?

Okay . . . If you can’t admit that you are fearful, is your lack of action a deficiency of faith or trust in the One who put it on your heart? What options can you offer that don’t sound like more lousy excuses? Hint . . . Don’t try to think of more. Get started.
