Mix or Match?

Contemplating the recommendation of his search committee, Rob said, “I don’t think he’s right for our team.”

Surprised, Jesse asked, “Why not?” She then paused to look at her notes again. “He’s got everything we said we were looking for. He did a great job with the interview, he had solid references, and everyone here really liked him.”

Rob nodded in agreement. “I know. On paper, he’s great. I think he answered all the questions just fine, but he and I are way too different.”

“What’s wrong with that?”

“I’ve worked hard to build this company. I need someone to come in here who thinks the same way I do and not rock the boat when I’m trying to make important decisions about our future.”

“Have you been paying attention the last ten years?” Jesse scoffed.

Rob raised his eyebrows. “What do you mean?”

“Have you not noticed that you and I are about as opposite as two people can be?”

“Yeah, but that’s different. Where we are different, it’s challenged me in ways that have been good for me and our company.”
