Attitude Assassin

by P.S. Harper

“Attitude is a skill. It can be changed. It can be improved, and it starts with owning it. You determine your attitude. Not your day, not a job, not a situation. Own it.”

“I’m so sick of them!” shouted Mary as she slammed her colleague’s door.

Gloria lunged forward, spilling coffee all down her shirt. “Sheesh! You scared me to death!”

Unconcerned, Mary continued. “They are all idiots! I wish I knew what bigger idiot put them in charge.”

While looking for something to dry off with, Gloria sternly asked, “Sick of who? What are you fired up about now?”

Mary angrily paced in front of Gloria’s desk. She pointed at Gloria. “Your boss! My boss! Katherine’s boss!” She paused and looked around the room for a moment. “Really, all the bosses in this department.”

Is everyone you coach, teach, supervise, report to, work with, etc., an idiot?

Do you constantly find yourself surrounded by people with terrible attitudes?

When you keep getting the sense that you are the only one with any sense, you may need to look deeper within.

Even if I only spend time alone, I will never completely avoid someone with a bad attitude. If I can’t keep my attitude on the up and up 24/7, why should I expect that of others?

As leaders, we are first and foremost responsible for our attitudes. Once we find a way to be and remain consistently positive, it’s time to start killing off the negative attitudes around us.

Sharper Leader:

- How is your attitude? Would people with good attitudes agree?

- If you believe you have a great attitude, what can you do to improve, sustain, or share it?

- You will always encounter people with nasty attitudes. How do you prevent your attitude from being negatively impacted by them? What do you do to impact theirs positively?

- Need help? Here are a few good books to start with:

o How to Stop Worrying and Start Living (Dale Carnegie)

o Do Over: Rescue Monday, Reinvent Your Work, and Never Get Stuck (Jon Acuff)

o Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff . . . and it’s all small stuff (Richard Carlson)
