That's not what I said
by P.S. Harper
“A lie can travel around the world and back again while the truth is lacing up its boots.”
Mark Twain

“You better do something about this!” Clair demanded as she and Davis started towards the parking lot.
“What?” Davis inquired.
“You better tell everyone what really happened, and the reason Jimmy quit.”
Davis smiled. “Why’s that?”
“Because, if you don’t, everyone is gonna believe what Jimmy’s been saying about it.”
Apparently unworried, Davis dismissively shook his head.
“You’re gonna lose everyone’s respect and maybe even get fired if you don’t tell your side.”
“Do you believe what he’s saying?” Davis asked.
“I don’t know. It worries me that you’re not defending yourself. It makes me wonder.”
“I’ve worked here for 20 years, and you’ve known me the whole time. Do you believe what he’s claiming lines up with what you know about me?”
“Well . . .” Clair paused. “No, not really. I’ve never heard you say anything like that. Everyone makes mistakes, but I’ve never seen you intentionally treat anyone like what he’s claiming.”
Davis smiled again and shrugged without another word.

Unfortunately, not everyone has the best intentions.
Not everyone will see things the same way.
Some people will believe what and whom they choose to believe, no matter what you do or don’t do. It is impossible to stay ahead of a lie that you don’t even know is coming.
Does your character need to be defended, or does it speak for itself?
What actions can you take today to guard against untrue, negative comments about you tomorrow?
Sharper Leader:
- Anytime this week you feel the need to defend your reputation, don’t. Write down what happens and how you feel about it afterwards.
- Make a list of traits you want people to see in you. Beside each one, write the things you currently do that would jeopardize that list.
- Review your list of traits with a mentor or trusted friend this week and ask how you can be more like what you’ve written.
Note: After enrolling, if you do not receive these weekly, please check your junk mail and add Scott@sharperleaders.com to your contacts.
