I Know What I'm Doing

“Average players want to be left alone.

Good players want to be coached.

Great players want to be told the truth.”

By the time I was a teenager, I had already learned everything I needed to know about life. I had to grow up a lot faster than most people I knew, so by the time I got to college, I didn’t need anyone. I had to figure out nearly everything myself, so I was 100% self-reliant and self-made.

My teachers don’t know diddly-squat.

If my teammates would just give me the ball, we would never lose.

My boss is an idiot.

If my colleagues would just do it my way, or better yet, just let me do it, things would be perfect.

If the morons around me would live the way I live, this neighborhood would be amazing.

Life can be very frustrating when you are always the best, wisest, and most talented person in the room. It’s hard to understand why the world just won’t see things the right way . . . You know . . . MY WAY!

Do you ever feel those things or anything similar? I hope you realize that all of what I wrote above this line is garbage thinking! Those types of thoughts are built primarily on arrogance, insecurities, and fear.

It’s too easy to convince ourselves that if we don’t want or ask for anyone’s help, we don’t have to wind up disappointed when we don’t get it.

Guess what. People will let you down. It is a guarantee!

Guess what else? You will let people down, too! It’s a fact of life. We have to get over it.

We are constantly blessed by having other leaders around us. If we don’t ask for coaching, it’s not because others aren’t worthy; it’s because we don’t want to be told the truth and be great.

Sharper Leader:

- You are most likely a good coach. How can you become more coachable?
