Am I Coachable?

Am I coachable?

Nope. Not really.

I want to be, but I have never been unoffendably coachable.

Throughout my life, when someone takes the brave and unpopular stance of telling me the truth—or at least their perspective—I immediately formulate all the reasons I did or didn’t do something.

Surely, if I explain myself, they’ll see it my way.

If they don’t agree with me yet, it's just that I haven’t provided enough information.

Mmmm-hmmm. Right.

I claim to want people’s unfiltered thoughts, but do my reactions reveal that?

Not as much as they should.

Being defensive and “explaining” my side teaches people that I’m not interested in being coached. I’m more interested in having them take my side or make me feel better.

That’s not being coachable.

That’s not wanting the truth.

That doesn’t lead to growth.

According to Doc, my attitude of “average” is keeping me from greatness.

This may be taking a bigger bite than I’m ready to chew, but I am now actively working toward being more coachable.

I want more feedback.

I want more honesty.

If you’re willing to take that brave step towards helping me become a better version of myself, I’ll do my best to receive it well, learn, and grow.

What about you?

Are you coachable?

SHARPER LEADER:

1.        Are you coachable?

  • Action Step: The next time someone offers feedback, pay attention to your immediate response.

2.        How do you respond to feedback?

  • Action Step: This week, when someone offers you feedback, just listen, learn, and grow. Agreement is not required.  Thank them for their honesty. Explanations sound defensive.

3.        Do people ask you for feedback?

  • Action Step: Ask three trustworthy people: “What is one thing I can do better?” Then resist the temptation to defend, justify, or explain. Simply, thank them, and say you’ll think about it.
