Barry Bryant

"The Facilitator"

by P.S. Harper

“Asking questions is at the heart of critical thinking. Questions challenge assumptions. Questions uncover the invisible forces behind behaviors and actions.”

“Great job teaching the class today, Mr. Barry! I really got a lot out of the lesson.”

Barry smiles as he sidesteps the compliment.

“I’m not a teacher; I’m just a facilitator.”

Confused, one of the newer class participants approaches Barry to shake his hand. “What do you mean? I think you’re a really good teacher.”

Doubling down, Barry deflects again. “Naw. I just ask a bunch of questions, and y’all take the lead. Y’all are the ones teaching me. I learn something new from y’all every week.”

I believe some of the best leaders are those who aren’t forceful in leading. Some of the best preachers are those who don’t come across as preachy. Some of the best teachers are lifelong students who ask questions and facilitate.

Barry Bryant, of Opelika, AL, is an excellent teacher, facilitator, follower, and leader. He is a life-giving example of what it means to lead by example as he routinely puts his money where his mouth is.

As I see him between church services, I’ll ask, “Whatcha up to?”

He usually provides the same casual response. “I’m just meandering around.”

Despite his claims, nothing about his actions is aimless. When he’s not listening to the sermon or teaching, he’s very intentional about interacting with others. He’s great at welcoming new visitors and encouraging faithful members. He makes people feel seen, appreciated, and loved.

I’ve repeatedly witnessed his gift-giving spirit and have been a blessed recipient. Through thoughtful favors and intentional presence, he creates lasting impact, strengthens community, and sharpens people’s faith. He prefers to go unnoticed, but I love watching his behind-the-scenes efforts in loving and leading.

Here are a few examples of how I’ve seen Barry bless others. Some of his go-to gifts are cast-iron skillets with a meaningful message, packs of sausage, and a plethora of books. He claims not to be a reader but gives away books like he’s earning commission. He’s promoted my first book a hundred times better than I have. He selflessly finds ways to introduce others in mutually beneficial ways for those he’s connecting, and he demands that if you’re going to eat out, “be a generous tipper.”

His love languages include serving Jesus, bragging about his wife, “Trudy,” and their children, sharing a meal at Byron’s BBQ, gifting Capps Sausage, reading and introducing others to Andy Andrews, and making his rounds on a beautiful Saturday morning.

If you happen to cross paths with Mr. Barry, introduce yourself and prepare to share your life’s story. Through his great questions, you will be sharpened. You may do most of the talking, but you’ll learn much more than you bargained for.

Sharper Leader:

1.      Are you a better teacher or student?

o   Action step: Pay attention to your conversations this week and identify when you teach, learn, and facilitate.

2.      What list would people create of ways you bless others?

o   Action step: Whether with your time, talents, or treasures, think of ways you prefer to bless others.

3.      Are you annoyed, or do you value being questioned?

o   Action step: Find someone who asks “frustrating” questions and see what you can learn.
