Did You Hear . . .

by P.S. Harper

"Give a compliment behind a deserving person's back.”

Robert Cialdini

“Did y’all hear David lost us the account?” Sheila asked.

“I heard he completely blew it with the clients.” Antwan piled on.

Kris said, “I don’t know why he’s still here. He’s a fossil and brings nothing to the team.”

Listening patiently, Alonzo had enough. “David’s the reason we have jobs. He’s a good man who’s worked hard his entire career. He cares more about us and this company than anyone. He’s been like a father or older brother to nearly everyone who’s come through here. If he “lost us the account,” I trust it must’ve been an account we needed to lose.

Good or bad, everyone has the ability to talk behind someone’s back. Isn’t it great that you have the ability to choose your words before ejecting them from your mouth?

You can speak words that are hurtful or helpful. You can fill people’s cups or drain them.

Instead of slanderous whispers behind closed doors, wouldn’t it be great if we used poster-worthy praises instead?

Sharper Leader:

1. Do you secretly criticize or praise more regularly?

o Action Step: Today, choose complimenting over criticizing.

2. Are you saying things you want repeated or kept quiet?

o Action Step: Try not to say anything today that you’d be embarrassed if repeated.

3. Do you compliment others for your benefit or theirs?

o Action Step: Speak kindly about others with the expectation they’ll never know you said it.
