Give Up

To be a better leader, you need to learn to give up.

I know that sounds like the exact opposite of what you’ve been told your whole life, so bear with me.

If I were telling you to quit, you’d be within your rights to say I’ve lost it.

When I say “give up,” I mean we should let go of the things that keep us from being great leaders.

  • Not listening.

  • Making it about me.

  • Putting my wants above others.

  • Needing to have all the answers.

  • Always looking out for myself first.

  • Holding onto things that I should be giving away.

Being a great leader requires sacrifice.

We need to sacrifice some of “my time” for the good of those we lead.

Great leaders sacrifice their comforts.

Leaders must give something up so others can grow.

Whether your wants, preferences, or time, what do you need to sacrifice to be a better leader?

If you’re unwilling to give anything up, you need to ask yourself, “Do I want to be a leader or just the boss?”

SHARPER LEADER:

1.        To be a better leader, what should you give up?

  • Action Step: Write down one thing you know is only for your benefit. Write all the positives that could come from that sacrifice.

2.        To help others grow, what should you give up?

  • Action Step: Write down something only you do, but you prevent others from growing because you won’t let it go.

3.        Do you need to give up being right?

  • Action Step: This week, when someone shares their thoughts, don’t correct or add on to their idea. Encourage them to take the lead on it.
