You want the truth?
Well . . . If you can't handle the truth, you better not ask this guy.
Dr. John Delony has been one busy dude! He has a couple of Ph.D.s, worked at various levels in higher education for about two decades, works for Dave Ramsey in Nashville, TN, has his own YouTube show, and oh yeah . . . wrote a couple of national best-selling books. On top of that, he's a married man with kids that he loves spending time with. Overall, he seems like a pretty legit guy.
I'm somewhat new to Dr. Delony and his leadership style. In the last four months, I've read two of his best-selling books, and I enjoy listening to his hit podcast. One thing you find out pretty quickly is that he doesn't sugarcoat it for ya.
I was fortunate enough to meet Dr. Delony recently (he said, "Call me John.") at a conference in Nashville where he was the keynote speaker. Afterwards, I thanked him for what he does, prayed over him, got a quick photo, and went to listen to some of that good ol' live music up there.
I'm a fan of the type of leader who tells you what you need to hear and not just what you want to hear. If you listen to his podcast or read his books, I reckon you'll agree that John is that kind of leader. Too many leaders would rather just "be supportive" of you for fear of you not liking them or offending you. I can tell you right now, if I'm heading towards the lion's den, I'd rather you risk offending me by telling me to hold my doggone horses.
If you would rather someone act all buddy-buddy with you while silently watching you ruin your career, relationships, or life, you and I have a different idea of what a true friend and leader is.
Let me ask you this: Do you want to be a Sharper Leader or be the kind of person who willingly allows others to get gobbled up by the lions?
Sharper Leader:
- Are you more interested in being liked or having the difficult conversations that create Sharper Leaders?
- What creates the more considerable regret: Losing your popularity or disregarding the best interest of others?
