Make Work Enjoyable

by Scott Harper

“Making sure you enjoy work isn't your company's job; it's your job."

Do you have that friend who has the worst boss on the planet . . . everywhere he has ever worked?

I oftentimes hear people explain how bad their work environment is, how unsupported they are, and what an atrocious boss they have.

Maybe so.

Is that you?

What do you need—or who do you need to change—for your work to be enjoyable?

A raise? A promotion? More freedom? A new boss? A new colleague?

It’s very rare to hear—actually, I don’t believe I’ve ever heard it—someone say, “My job would be a lot better if I were a lot better.”

Recognizing that, except in rare circumstances, we have the power to make our work more enjoyable is truly refreshing. How empowering would it be to admit: “If I fix my rotten attitude, I’m pretty sure I could love my job and the people I work with.”

I can imagine leaders of all sorts applauding that statement.

Now, on the flip side of that coin. If you are a leader who routinely complains, “If my team were a lot better, my job would be amazing,” it may be time to fix your attitude as well.

Whether you’re a coach or player, employee or employer, or teacher or student, you can change things about yourself to make your circumstances more enjoyable.
