There IS a Bright Side

How are things going for you?

Are they great?

Not so great?

If you’re in a rough patch, do you believe things will get better?

Has life handed you so many lemons that you despise lemonade?

When people are hurting, most folks don’t want a “look at the bright side,” or a “things could always be worse” speech. Sometimes it seems nearly impossible to see anything positive on the horizon.

Well, since most people don’t like those speeches . . . I’ll give you a “Hang in there. Things will get better” speech.

Motivational speaker Nick Vujicic has every reason in the world to shun the bright side, yet his incredible optimism certainly makes me reconsider complaining about having to do physical therapy after my recent knee surgery.

My knee will heal.

Nick was born without arms or legs. As a child, he was bullied, suffered severe depression, and attempted suicide at just 10 years old. Hearing his story, I wouldn’t blame him for avoiding optimism.

Would you?

Around age 17, Nick realized that his negative outlook wasn’t helping. When he began sharing his story, he discovered that his optimism increased as he helped others find theirs.

Today, he motivates millions around the world.

If you want to become more optimistic, you might try helping others become more optimistic.

Sometimes the only way to see the bright side is to help someone else see it.

SHARPER LEADER:

1.      Do you see the glass as half full or do you criticize the one who poured it?

  • Action Step: With each opportunity to express frustration this week—don’t. If you feel incapable of optimism, just try silence first.

2.      Do you believe you have no reason to be optimistic?

  • Action Step: Start by writing one thing that you believe will be better tomorrow. Tomorrow, write one more thing. Continue until you find positive improvements you weren’t expecting.

3.      Do you believe optimistic people aren’t realistic or honest?

  • Action Step: Avoid the desire to be negative this week. Be as optimistic as possible, even if it feels fake.  Make notes on how you feel as you continue this.
