SHARPER LEADER

"Happy Healer"

“When you see a person without a smile, give them yours.”

Are you a doctor?

Are you a nurse?

How about a medically trained professional of any kind?

No? Well, I guess you can’t heal anyone, can you?

Don’t tell that to my wife, Leslie. During her ongoing treatments at Atlanta Cancer Care (ACC) in Atlanta, GA, she continuously experiences “treatment” and “healing” each time she visits, whether she sees Dr. May, a nurse, or never leaves the lobby.

Ever since she and I met in 2021, Leslie has bragged about the exceptional care and love she received and still receives at ACC. With the extra special attention, professionalism, and kindness she receives, each visit is another opportunity to be blessed during physically, mentally, and emotionally challenging times. Everyone from the parking lot attendants to the doctors and nurses, each person always makes her visit a little more bearable while battling, recovering from, and receiving ongoing treatments for breast cancer.

Through all her appointments with ACC, one person stands out above the rest. From the first time Leslie shared her medical diagnosis with me while we were dating, she would routinely say, “Mona is the best!” or “You’ve got to meet Mona.”

I’m happy to report that Mona is as advertised!

Tomona “Mona” Abrams is the Patient Service Representative at ACC (Perimeter/Tower location) and is the first face you encounter upon entering their main lobby. Nobody goes to the oncologist looking for a good time. It’s a place where people go because their lives are on the line and they need professional assistance and prayer.

When you enter Mona’s workspace, you aren’t just greeted by an employee; you are loved wholeheartedly by a mother, a sister, a daughter, a best friend, a therapist, a challenger, a listener, and a true healer. Nobody there looks forward to cancer treatment, but everyone there looks forward to Mona.

Each time I go to Leslie’s appointment with her, I witness the same level of love, enthusiasm, and demonstration of being a Sharper Leader. Mona comes out from behind her desk to embrace us with a hug, a beautiful smile, and the feeling of connecting with a favorite, long-lost relative.

I know I’m biased, but I believe Leslie is an amazing person, and people warm up to her faster than chocolate melts in your hand. It did not surprise me in the slightest bit that Leslie had developed such a special relationship with someone who worked at ACC.

Of the many times Leslie told me about Mona before we met, I assumed she was bragging about someone the way she always does. She has a gift of seeing the best in everyone. After finally meeting and seeing Mona in action for myself, I realized Leslie wasn’t just making someone sound better than most people see them; Mona makes everyone feel special. It is such a blessing to witness people stop by on their way in and out of treatment for a hug, a laugh, and receiving some “Mona time” before facing the real world again.

While I am indeed grateful for all the medical professionals who save lives, I am equally appreciative of “healers,” such as Mona, who God puts in our paths to help lighten the load. Mona and the exceptional team of ACC professionals are true blessings to many, and Leslie and I are incredibly fortunate to have such a place of care.
