What Have You Learned?

by Scott Harper

“Everyone wants to make change; how many are willing to change themselves?"

July 15, 2026

This is the 100th edition of The Sharper Minute.

I’m so grateful to each of you who have read, subscribed, shared, and encouraged me along the way. Thank you for your support, feedback, and valuable time. Please keep sharing with others!

Writing every week isn’t easy.

Posting every week isn’t easy.

When subscriber numbers remain stagnant, and engagement feels like talking to an uninterested cat, self-doubt often creeps in.

Imposter Syndrome rears its ugly head each time I fail to lead well, listen intently, speak kindly, or demonstrate patience.

Through reading, writing, studying, and sharing, I understand that not everyone wants to grow in the same areas as me or with me. In studying and teaching leadership, I’ve realized that true leadership begins with self-leadership.

Over the past 100 newsletters, I’ve identified some of my greatest opportunities for growth as: listen better, practice patience, remain silent longer, praise more, and accept that my advice isn’t always needed or wanted.

Sharperleaders.com is a place I created for leaders who choose to lead better, learn more, and grow intentionally.

The Sharper Minute was never intended to be a guide of “1,001 easy steps to becoming a great leader.”

Instead, the focus has been on self-leadership, self-development, humility, personal responsibility, intentional growth, and the truth about how uncomfortable leadership can be.

It’s for people willing to accept personal accountability.

It’s for people ready to stop groaning and start growing.

It’s for leaders to selfishly develop themselves into selfless leaders.

The real secret about Sharper Leaders: I’m writing to myself.

I write each newsletter as an honest, weekly reminder that leaders should never stop trying to lead better, learn more, and grow through the uncomfortable struggles of leadership.

As you’ve sharpened yourself through these first 100 newsletters, how have you led better, what have you learned, and where have you grown?

Whether you feel qualified or not, whether you believe people want your advice or not, how will you sharpen someone else today?

Leadership isn’t about the final objective; it’s about leading, learning, and growing along the way.

SHARPER LEADER:

1.        How much sharper have you become as a leader?

  • Action Step: Identify an area where you are leading better now than you were before.

2.        What have you learned about leadership and yourself?

  • Action Step: Write down things you’ve learned that have helped you improve as a leader.

3.        How have you grown and helped others grow?

  • Action Step: Make a list of personal areas of growth. How can you use the moments of discomfort to help others grow?  Who should you share the newsletter with today?
