What Will You Do About It

“Lectures don't have half the effect of consequences."

“I’m telling you for the last time—you better have it done by this Friday . . . or else!”

“Oh, yeah? I’ll get right on that. (Translation: maybe next Tuesday—if I feel like it.).”

~~~~~~~~~~
Does that sound familiar?
Have you ever received such exasperated demands from a parent, coach, or supervisor?
Or worse—are you the one making them?
I’ve often said: An expectation without consequences is only a suggestion.
If people aren’t responding to your clearly stated expectations, maybe they believe you’re just offering suggestions.
Without consequences, why change?
Other than enduring a little bellyaching, what’s the big deal?
Whether you want change in others or yourself, clear and consistent consequences often yield the best results.
That said, never make empty or unreasonable threats that don’t match the severity of the situation.
If your team isn’t responding, it may be time to look in the mirror and ask how you can better set them up for success.
Start small.
Be clear.
Follow through.
Be consistent.
Enjoy more positive results.
SHARPER LEADER:
1.      Are you often frustrated with others not meeting expectations?
  • Action Step: Make your next expectation clear, understood, agreed upon, tied to a reasonable deadline, and with consequences you will actually enforce.
2.      Do your own actions need accountability?
  • Action Step: Identify where you need to improve. Ask for accountability from someone who will enforce your agreed-upon consequences if you fall short.
3.      Can you make the hard decision?
  • Action Step: Make it. Failure is inevitable. Repeated failure without action is a leadership problem.
